LAZY HABITS:

2012 brings with it the long awaited debut album from Lazy Habits, which will be released this Spring, with a lead single and a full UK tour.

Uncompromising, infectious and original, Lazy Habits are ready to take their place amongst the growing stars of the UK Urban Music Scene. Inspired by New Orleans jazz, soul, hip hop, big bands of the 50’s and soaked in British culture, their eclectic sound packs a lasting and unforgettable punch, with the band describing themselves as "Beats, rhymes and brass of the highest calibre”

Originally the brainchild of one MC, the Hackney based outfit now stand as a full seven piece band, whose onstage energy is a colossal live experience that will keep you buzzing long after you’ve left the venue. Having notched up shows at Shepherd’s Bush Empire, The Roundhouse, KOKO and Sold Out The Jazz Cafe, hitting venues up and down the UK, supporting the likes of Mos Def, Soulwax, The Specials, Bonobo, Chali 2Na (Jurassic5) and Beardyman, Lazy Habits have won hearts and blown minds, proving they can take on any stage. They've smashed Glastonbury with their live performances, hosted and DJ'd on “The Other” and “Jazz World” stages, ticking off slots at Bestival, Lovebox, Green Man, The Big Chill, Soundwave, Secret Garden Party and Edinburgh Festival along the way, to mention just a few.

Their debut self-released EP ‘On the Wagon’ put the Habits on the radar of Taste Maker Huw Stephens, and blew up on the underground scene, selling out on pre-orders alone. Their most recent single ‘Starting Fires’ caused controversy as it was scheduled for release the week of the London riots and was consequently pulled from radio play lists across the board.

GENIUS COLLECTIVE:

Established in 2010, Genius Collective offer a jazzy take on the hip hop band concept. With the band consisting of a fusion of hip hop heads, to classically trained jazz musicians, their style blends honest, feel good lyrics with funk rhythms to get your head nodding, your mind thinking and your feet moving. Inspired by Bonobo, The Roots, The Bamboos and Ty to name a few, Genius Collective aim to hit the scene soulfully with their distinctive sound.

ABOUT JON KENNEDY...

I'd like to introduce you to an artist who is climbing up the ranks of the music loving masses.... he goes by the name of Jon Kennedy.

Almost certainly one of the 3 most talented men hailing from Stockport, UK. Jon is a man on a musical mission. What the end result may be remains a bit of a mystery, not least to the man himself but rest assured it includes an enormous bag of breath-takingly beautiful tunes, copious rump-shakingly fine dancefloor corkers and a hatful of innovative ideas bordering on musical genius.
He's certainly a talented chap.

Autumn 2002 Jon joined the Grand Central family. Bred a stone’s throw from GCHQ, his childhood in Stockport was characterized by exposure to new and interesting music, as a function of his parents’ enthusiasm for the pioneering artists of their day. Jon cites Peter Frampton, Electric Light Orchestra, David Essex and Geoff Wayne’s “War of the Worlds” (check out the H.G. Wells classic !) as early influences. His taste would in part be shaped also by his brother’s musical excavations, which brought him into contact with more guitar-centric bands like KISS and AC/DC.

RELEASES...

Jon already to his credit, has numerous 12" releases, a great debut album entitled ‘We're Just Waiting For You Now’ on the, well respected, Brighton based record label Tru Thoughts Recordings.

In August 2003 he releasd his second Long Player for Manchester based record label Grand Central Records entitled ‘Take My Drum To England’. Which was followed by a third ‘Useless Wooden Toys’ on Grand Central Records as well. Completing his 4th long player entitled ‘14’ which was be released on Florida, USA based Organik Recordings in June 2009 he moves now onto his 5th LP released via Organik Recordings for 2012.

DJ...

His DJ style is varied but always geared to the dancefloor. Jon has travelled the globe with his records, making it as far a field as China, Malaysia and Japan and can be found DJing at various clubs and bars around EUROPE on a regular basis.

LIVE BAND...

As a live act, he performs with a six piece band and plays drums himself. The rest of the live band is made up of Dan Coggins on guitar, Ben Thomas on bass, Naomi Hart on keyboard, Sarah Scott on vocals, Bernard Moss of Pork Recordings on flute and alto sax, and DJ Cheeba on the decks. They've been keeping busy on the festival circuit... you might have caught them on the main stage at Shambala this summer!

Don't miss him rockin the Custard Factory this Friday!

DJ Shepdog is the creative force behind the long running NICE UP! night, and more recently record label, as well as A&R consultant for many other labels, Shepdog is a regular face on the London DJ circuit as well as festivals and clubs across the globe.

Having promoted parties and DJ'd for the best part of 20 years, he has played alongside many of the greats, be it dropping classic hip hop, funk and disco or spinning reggae, drum & bass and dubstep. With a mission statement of "righteous party vibes" there's always plenty of people on the dancefloor and hands in the air.

Recently making the move into production, Shep's mash-ups have been a massive hit with DJs across the board, establishing NICE UP! as one of the finest in the land. Tunes such as "Bigger Than Jamrock", "Skanking In The Way Of Control" and "Dare Man" have proved popular with DJs across the board and have earned Shep a reputation for being able to rock any dance.

His skanking version of The Gossip's "Standing In The Way Of Control" picked up plays on national radio support from DJs such as Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, DJ Yoda, Don Letts, Steve Lamacq and A Skillz. Two volumes of the hugely popular compilation CD "Cut Ups, Muck Ups & Bruck Ups" have twice scored in the Top 10 Compilations of 2010 at Rough Trade and the label is a permanent fixture at the top of Juno’s sales charts.

The ever-eclectic DJ Moneyshot has won a mad decent following for his killer mixtapes, bubbling live sets, and party-smacking tunes. He’s an all round good egg, and jaw-droppingly nimble ‘pon the decks.

His style is mad tight, and best described as “dancefloor beats, booties and bass with hip-hop skills,” if you ever find yourself in a situation needing it.

“DJ Moneyshot is a stupidly talented mixer who never forgets that a DJ’s primary role is to get people dancing. And he will certainly do that”

The Guardian

When he’s not getting big love in ink, he’s getting props from cats in the field. Yoda admits to biting mixes off him, and DJ Food called him his favourite DJ out there right now. Praise indeed.

Thanks to his official induction into Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel radio family, Moneyshot has being shining hard on the mixtape scene. His sets are the stuff of legend. Besides rocking thousands of downloads, winning Mix of the Year, and hitting over 36 countries a month, they all sound dope on your way to work.

Bar that, in the style of the day, Moneyshot has recently branched out into making tunes, and has had crazy airplay from Rob Da Bank, Huw Stephens and Bethan Elfyn over at BBC Radio 1. His recent Stunt Cock EP on bootie legend label Big M has been smashing dancefloors worldwide, and his remixes of House head Eats Everything and Rap superstar Joe Driscoll are characteristically off the chain.

Although he has been saying “this is my year” since around ’93, 2011 is Moneyshot’s year. He’s not sure what to do with it yet, but is looking forward to a jam-packed summer of festivals and mad European gigs.

“Don your dancing trousers,” says the man himself. “And maybe even your boogie shoes.” Either way, stay sharp, and keep your ears out for your man Moneyshot this year, and all other years to follow.

He loves you, your girlfriend loves him, and he is now taking crazy bookings like a cut-price Vegas wedding chapel.

DJ Killer Tomato (Goldie Lookin Chain Tour DJ / DMC Finalist) 11/11/2011

- DJ Killer Tomato (Goldie Lookin Chain Tour DJ / DMC UK 2nd place / Solid Steel) www.djkillertomato.com
- Maxwell 33 (Home Cookin)
- Mylz (Hedz) www.mixcloud.com/mylz
With over 10 years experience of rocking clubs and parties across the land Killer Toms career summary speaks for itself. With guest scratches on Goldie Lookin Chain albums, radio spots, European tours, Dj Battles, a couple of Welsh television appearances and a cup of tea with Westwood, Cardiff's Killer Tomato is the party DJ to run with.
His roots firmly in hip hop, Killer Tom learnt to scratch before he could walk. Earning his stripes on the battle circuit, he wowed the judges at the 2004 UK DMC Team Finals taking a prestigious second place victory. After hearing of his win SFDB records boss Secondson linked him with MC King Gritty. Killer T went on to lay cuts down for the Freestyle Champs EP and the entire SFDB roster.  The pair completed two UK Tours with Hip Hop legend Skinnyman, (who quoted Killer T as "having one of the nicest ears in the game"!) even notching up a recording session at the legendary Maida Vale studio's for Radio 1.
In 2005 Killer Tom was invited on tour with Newport's finest tracksuit wearing pranksters the Goldie Lookin Chain, rocking  crowds across the UK and Europe, he clocked up enough lanyards to even make MR T's neck groan. He got on so well with the boyo's they asked him to be their tour manager! Killer Tom has since gone on to tour with acts as diverse as Feeder, The Automatic, Killer Kela, Alabama 3 and Jehst.
His legendary mix-tapes have received critical acclaim from industry big dogs DJ Yoda and Dan Greenpeace, prized for their technical ability and sure fire tune selection. In  2006 he was nominated for a Best New DJ Welsh Music Award and just last year Mixcloud voted Killer Tom in their Top 50 cloudcasters alongside DJ Marky and Erol Elkan. His mixes feature regularly on Ninja Tunes Soid Steel Radio show having clocked up three guest appearances with more to come.
His undoubted block rocking deck skills have seen him smash parties at the Clothes Show Live and the infamous Carling Leeds Festival, taken him as far a field as Slovenia playing an eclectic mix of Electro, Funk, Drum and Bass, Hip Hop, Dubstep and Breaks with a turntablist twist.
So whether its rocking the festival circuit with mobile jocks Nokia, digging out that next  banger for his next floor smashing set, having a brew with the big dawg, or managing the internationally acclaimed Welsh Secret Wars Team be sure to check him live!

We are very excited to be back at our original home, especially as it's been brilliantly renovated in a New York style, with a brand new dancefloor on the 4th floor, kitted out with a chunky Turbosound sound-sytem, complete with extra bass. There are also three bars now, so there should be no more queuing problems.

Heducation Launch @ 78 (formerly Medicine Bar) - Fri 28 Oct 28/10/2011

Heducation Returns To The Custard Factory For A Weekly Party!

In January 2001, Heducation was born at the Medicine Bar, in the legendary Custard Factory, designed to bridge the gap between hip-hop culture and club ethos, and to make hip-hop and funk music more accessible to hedz in the Midlands.

Now, a decade later, the Custard Factory has witnessed yet another transformation of this awesome venue. A full refurbishment sees the brand new ‘78 Bar’ open with a stunning New York style interior, with dark wooden floors throughout, three new copper-plated bars, and a spacious dancefloor on the brand new fourth floor, kitted out with a chunky Turbosound sound-system and extra bass.

It is with very great pleasure that we celebrate our return to our original home on Friday 28th October with a grand launch party!

The music policy is strictly the bounciest of hip-hop, the funkiest of breaks, and a ghetto funk finale - a new sub-genre of breaks which is sweeping the dance scene. Guest DJs include DJ Shepdog from Nice Up! Records, resident at London’s Jazz Café, as well as DJ Moneyshot, Solid Steel mixtape resident for Ninja Tune.

See you there!

Soundwave Festival Launch Party ft MARK RAE (Rae & Christian / Grand Central / Yesking) 26/3/2011

Mark Rae Heducation

Tickets:https://www.theticketsellers.co.uk/buy_tickets/events/?id=10014915

Heducation, “Birmingham’s number one hip hop and breaks night” (Area Culture Guide, 2011) was born at the Medicine Bar in 2001. Ten years and 400 events later, we are preparing to rock the shores of Croatia as part of the annual Soundwave Festival. In celebration, we are hosting the Midlands launch party for the festival, with special guest DJ, Mark Rae - the head of Fat City Record Store, Grand Central Records and Yesking Records.

Soundwave Festival is set on the beaches of the idyllic Dalmatian coast in central Europe, and has played host to some of the scene’s most influential artists including Hexstatic, DJ Yoda, DJ Vadim and Zero 7. The line-up this year is undoubtedly the best yet - headlined by legendary UK rapper, Roots Manuva, as well as Bonobo, Keb Darge and many more. Heducation will be joining the throng to represent the Midlands with a heavy dose of funk, hip-hop and breaks.

From 1987, Mark Rae managed and co-owned Manchester’s celebrated music store, Fat City Records. He later launched and ran the highly revered, Grand Central Records, which held a place at the top of the UK’s independent music scene until 2006. During this time, Mark stacked up releases with Steve Christian under the ‘Rae & Christian’ guise, as well as co-writing with Mr Scruff of Ninja Tune fame, and producing hundreds of remixes of artists including Jay-Z and Bob Marley.

Mark later moved to Los Angeles where he started the band, Yesking, as well as Yesking Records – a label which embraces hip-hop with dancehall, ska and ragga values. More recently, Rae and Christian have been recording together again for the first time in ten years, and their third album is poised for release! Mark’s next solo project will include a book covering his journey in the music industry with plenty of bizarre and wonderful events brought to light through the eye of the stylus.

Don’t miss this exclusive Midlands performance from one of the pioneers of the UK’s independent music scene!!!

CHALI 2NA (JURASSIC 5) - with full live band 18/3/2011

Chali 2na - Jurassic 5

We are proud to welcome the legendary Jurassic 5 MC, Chali 2na, performing live with a full band.

Chali 2na has done it all. From his days growing up on the hardscrabble streets of Chicago’s south side, to his subsequent explosion onto Los Angeles’ burgeoning hip-hop scene, to his tenure as MC for seminal hip-hop group Jurassic 5, Chali epitomizes the portrait of a 21st century artist.

To be sure, with his unmistakable, beloved ba...ritone, Chali has firmly established himself as one of the most distinctive, charismatic personalities not just in hip-hop, but music in general.

Only a select few can say they’ve rocked microphones in front of thousands at a sold-out arena in Tokyo with Jurassic 5, spit rhymes at Lollapalooza, and painted professional caliber oil color paintings in their California home.

Plus support from Heducation DJs.

HEDUCATION 10TH BIRTHDAY!!! 28/1/2011

Wow! 10 years! It’s hard to believe. We truly couldn’t have done it without the support and help of so many people! To all the DJs, co-promoters, venue managers, MCs, b-boys and b-girls, artists, flyerers, door staff, and last, but by no means least, the audiences! Thank you!

We have been privileged to have some incredible artists perform for us, since we started in 2001, including Public Enemy, Sugarhill Gang, De La Soul, Blackalicious, Roots Manuva, DJ Craze, DJ Yoda, Beardyman & DJ Premier (Gangstarr) …and there’s more to come in 2011, including Chali 2na (Jurassic 5) & Mark Rae (Grand Central).

We are going to celebrate the 10th Birthday in the same way Heducation started – for the people, by the people. We have invited back the key resident DJs and VJs that have made Heducation what it is today, and asked them to play their favourite Heducation anthems of the last decade, to create the ultimate soundtrack to an amazing 10 years of hip-hop, funk and breaks parties.

KRS One live!!! @ HMV Institute 23/10/2010

KRS-One aka 'The Teacher' has survived street life, homelessness, and the murder of crew member Scott La Rock to emerge as one of hip-hop's most powerful figures.

While many of his contemporaries have confined their raps to boasting and glorifying gunplay, KRS-One, originally in Boogie Down Productions, has always considered his time on the mic as an opportunity to enlighten his listeners both politically and socially.

His boomi...ng voice and skillful rhyming have helped him achieve huge sales, and he has used his earnings to influence and finance projects that stress dignity, self-worth, the acquisition of knowledge, and otherwise advance his humanistic views.

KRS-One is beyond rap, he is a manifestation of hip hop culture.

Heavily influenced by old skool hip hop, they embrace the original styles of rap music; turntablism and MCing. DJ Young Einstein is well-known for killer scratches and live tricks, and is a key part of the show.

Renowned for their live shows in which they fully engage the crowd, creating an incredible, dynamic performance, these guys are unmissable for anyone into the funky, old skool styles of hip-hop.

Guru (Gangstarr / Jazzmatazz) Tribute - cancer charity fundraiser 28/5/2010

"Instead of preaching death in my songs I breathe life."

The legendary hip hop MC, Guru (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) died last month aged 43, following a battle with cancer.

His work with Gangstarr, Jazzmatazz and later as a solo artist was reverred around the world by fans and musicians from all backgrounds.

The group Gangstarr was conceived as early as 1985, and steadily started to help to define the sound of New York hip-hop. Guru's positive lyrics and anti-thugging stance, combined with DJ Premier's unique production skills, have struck a chord with many a listener. By 2003, Gangstarr had 6 albums and untold numbers of fans under their belt.

Guru's Jazzmatazz project was truly ground-breaking, bringing together disparate artists including Donald Byrd, N'Dea Davenport, Roy Ayers, Chaka Khan, Ramsey Lewis, Branford Marsalis and Jamiroquai to create original and pioneering sounds, and break boundaries between genres.

All proceeds of this event will go to cancer charities. Below are the suggestions we have received so far - please contact us if you have any ideas...

Not only that but, DJ Switch’s turntablist crew, Bionic Stylus, twice holders of the UK team crown, will be combining forces to scratch and weave together hip hop, dubstep and drum & bass, as they make their first appearance together in Birmingham.

With his trademark slick blend of classic breaks, hip-hop, electronica, rock, kid’s records, d&b, and in fact everything in between and beyond, Cheeba has the unrivalled technical ability, knowledge and humour to pull it all together like no one else. In 2008, Cheeba won the coveted ‘Solid Steel Mix Of The Year’ with his, highly regarded, genre twisting mixtape ‘The Case of The Missing Records’ and has since officially joined the Solid Steel family alongside Ninja Tune legends such as Coldcut and DJ Food.

Cheeba is now pushing boundaries even further, using turntables and Serato Video SL to enable video controlled by real vinyl records. Cheeba brings scratching and juggling both sounds and pictures into the mix with stunning live results. Original films, remixes and music videos blend seamlessly with inspired video mash-ups, unusual animations and a wealth of wonderful and often bizarre visual sources. It’s a video show unlike any other!

To say that DJ Switch's rise to fame is nothing less than dramatic would be very accurate, as he is the first to win 5 UK DMC DJ championships, the first to win 3 consecutive UK DMC Battle For Supremacy titles and yes... the first to win 2 back-to-back World DMC Battle For Supremacy titles, and all by the tender age of twenty.

As well as his club and battle duties, Switch is now a part-time DJ tutor, specialising in digital DJing and turntablism. He also has a countless list of radio broadcast work, youth training schemes and several other projects to his name, including his performance of Gabriel Prokofiev's "Concerto For Turntables & Orchestra" which has received critical acclaim from audiences and critics alike.

Heducation has been putting on events in the Midlands, across the UK and Europe since the beginning of 2001, embracing hip hop, funk, breaks, drum + bass, dubstep, soul, reggae and everything in between. It's always been about good vibes, good music, and friendly hedz. Guest artists have including Public Enemy, De La Soul, DJ Yoda and UK beatbox champion, Beardyman.

ARTIST BIOGS:

DJ SWITCH (UK DMC SUPREMACY CHAMP 2007) - http://www.myspace.com/djswitchbeatz

Anthony Culverwell aka DJ Switch is one of the UK’s most promising and upcoming talents. As a 2 times national champion, an artist keen to explore undiscovered gems of music and share them, as well as displaying his technical prowess, he already represents the way forward in the art of the DJ.
Switch has stayed in the shadows of the Birmingham DJ scene for some time. Having begun at the tender age of 11, he remained self-taught for two years until entering the DJ Academy. He has since worked with Walsall-based graffiti artist Chu, Brum circuit-regulars Munchbreak, has been featured on MTV, BBC Breakfast, Blue Peter and within various other articles.
The year 2005 saw him get his first major breaks. He entered the Youth Music mixtape competition to play an opening slot at the Homelands festival and won, despite making and sending in the mix at the last minute. Subsequently he spun to a crowd in excess of 10,000, warming the stage for such turntable luminaries as the Scratch Perverts, Grandmaster Flash & DJ Kentaro. The very same week saw him win the Derby heat of the DMC battle, beating off 25 other competitors for a place in the national final. The win subsequently led to his appearance and performance on Ras Kwame’s Radio 1 show.
Eager for victory, next year did not disappoint as Switch finally claimed his first title, the DMC UK Battle for Supremacy – the youngest winner Britain has seen in any category – and gained a very respectable 3rd place at the world finals. Keen to do better for himself and his country, he defended and successfully retained his accolade the subsequent year (another first) and intends to do so for a third time.
But Anthony does not just confine himself to battling; he regularly gets involved in community work and youth education. The ‘Soundshifter’ project saw him working with DJ Moyma and a number of multi-instrumentalists to help music students create their own experimental compositions; he has aided in the running of temporary broadcast stations Kic FM and Smethwick Sound FM for young people; ‘Start Local’ saw him aiding Birmingham-based bands and vocalists in improving their performing talents, and he has also helped in various peoples' DJ tuition.
In his live performances, Switch's eclecticism doesn't stop his shows being technically adept, entertaining, and showcasing the gemstones of music you don't get to hear everyday. Everything is “cut, pasted and mixed to make a tasty lasagne”. An approach which few are either technically able to take, or prepared to do, Switch represents where the art of the DJ can be taken.

MC BARROWCLOUGH (PHANTOM LIMB) - LIVE! - http://www.myspace.com/verticalthinkers

Since his first release in 1994, under the name MC Damaj, Barrowclough has graced studios and stages alike with a unapologetic energy and enthusiasm, using poetic lyrics to challenge the accepted vices of hip-hop, and offer an alternative viewpoint on life.
He has been a key member of Michaelis Constant - LP releases included 'Foreign Correspondence' (1999), and 'Gondwanaland' (2002) - for those that slept, check out www.zangproductions.co.uk. More recently, he has performed as part of the Phantom Limb Phenomenon, and following months of hard work, is on the verge of finishing the production of his first solo LP.
Watch out for his legendary tracks - 'Penalties', which is a thorough analysis of England's inability to win the world cup, and also the legendary beard track.

XERXES (TEMPO TANTRUM, LONDON) - http://www.myspace.com/xerxes_tt

Xerxes is one of the main driving forces behind Tempo Tantrum. Tempo Tantrum launched in London in 2000, bringing together different breakbeat styles - 2-step, breaks and broken beat. With DnB in one room and a mix of breaks, broken beat and dubstep in the other, Tempo Tantrum lived up to its name and has since become renowned for eclectic events with a vibe that is second to none. The mission was simple - to join the dots between all the different mutations of breakbeat.
Over the years guest DJs have included Dee Kline (Rat Records), Tipper (Fuel Records), Landslide (Hospital Records), J Da Flex (1Xtra), Aquasky (Passenger Records), Danny McMillan (TCR), DJ Quest (Cyberfunk Records), Horsepower Productions (Tempa) and Jason Sparks (Botchit and Scarper).
Expect some fiery-but-funky breaks to finish off the evening.

Artist Biogs:

DJ VADIM - http://www.myspace.com/djvadim

Founder of Jazz Fudge in early 1995, A&R, producer, DJ, promoter, record collector, radio presenter, occasional painter, writer, and in-house producer/dj and cohort of Latin Grammy nominees, Spanish hip hop super group 7 Notas 7 Colorez, Vadim has certainly been keeping himself busy. And that’s before we even mention his...

DJing

...which has seen him perform in virtually every country in Europe(east and west), all over North America, Australia, New Zealand. Japan, Israel, Turkey, South America and South East Asia in just the last year. He has also performed with the likes of DJ Krush, Company Flow, The Roots, Pharcyde, Public Enemy, Beat Junkies, Dilated Peoples, Kraftwerk, supported Super Furry Animals, Morcheeba and Paul Weller as well as at events like Glastonbury and the Moscow Street Ball festival (to over 60,000 people!). To describe the man as an internationalist almost seems to sell him short. In 1992, the Russian ex-pat bought a sampler and started working on the music that would become Abstract hallucinating Gases and Headz ain't ready. Later in the year he signed to Ninja Tune which culminated in his debut LP USSR Repertoire. From these early recordings came a remix LP USSR Reconstruction featuring DJ Krush, Kid Koala, Mark B, Silent Poets, various 12” both for Ninja Tune and Jazz Fudge, a mix tape and CD with DJ Primecuts ( world ITF champ 99 and Scratch Pervert). In 1999 came the abstract funk collaboration LP of The Isolationist produced by Vadim, scratched by DJ Primecuts and vocalised by anti pop consortium. Relentless international tours followed with Swollen Members/Company Flow/ Jazz Fudge....and the purchase of yet more dusty vinyl's to his already burdening collection.
This all culminated in the very successful last LP USSR: Life from the other side (Ninja Tune 1999). The LP featured Co Flow, Scratch perverts, Iriscience(from dilated peoples), Blade amongst others and caused quite a storm in USA with the track ‘your revolution’ featuring Sarah Jones. This song was banned by the FCC (USA radio regulators) for explicit and provocative lyrics, despite Jones actually satirising the attitudes and words of the mainstream rap and r&b that could be heard pumping out of the radio every day.

Time for some Russian Percussion

To promote that LP, Vadim put together a live group - The Russian Percussion - consisting of Mr thing (turntables), Killer Kela (beat box), Blu Rum 13 (mc), John Ellis (Keyboards) and himself. The response to the group was amazing and they performed together in over 600 shows in about 45 countries including most of Europe and North America. Feeling tired yet? Hang on in there. 2001 saw even more dj’ing, production and actually presenting, for the very first time... The BBC commissioned 3 radio shows including the very successful Sony award nominated programme ‘around the world in 8 relays’. Tours followed with Sarah Jones, Killa Kela as support and collaborator for Super furry Animals and Spanish and South American tours with '7 Notas 7 Colorez' which resulted in the group being nominated by the Latin Grammies for best Latin Hip Hop group. The Art of listening is born "…Listening” has all of the angular abstractions of Vadim’s earlier work, but here it is combined with a new depth of musicality, a love of bass and an interest in music and words from around the world. So, alongside UK MC's like Taskforce and Phi Life Cipher and the cream of US underground wordspitters like Slug, Gift of Gab, Motion Man and Vakill can be found Polish jazz legend Urzula Dudziak (a favoured sample source for 'A Tribe Called Quest' back in the day), Gruff from Super Furry Animals, Brazilian Swedish mistress of poetic innovation Yarah Bravo, Ade Soma and the Reverend Clevie Brown. Tablas and djembe drums mix with Japanese flutes, Brazilian guitars, spoken word, obscure scratched sound bites and a definite UK street sound incorporating hints of jungle bass and drums, all build the whole into something unusual and special It makes for a heady mixture, a record which Vadim describes as "a very grown up but cheeky and extremely musical album.” Urban but experimental, fresh and different, this record goes beyond not only what he has done before, but beyond much of today’s hip hop. With its global view of music, it’s new emphasis on soul, its concrete feel for the aesthetic of the sample, "The Art Of Listening” is funny, serious, unique.

The super group ONE SELF

All of this transports us to 2005 and Vadim hasn’t been idle! Something new has been brewing in East London and it isn't grime or the smell of Indian curry. Cosmopolitan, diverse, colourful, loud and definitely not middle of the road, perhaps an ideal setting for this debut international hip hop crew. After circumnavigating the globe more times than NASA collectively these artists individually are not new to this game but what better place is there to meet and fuse 3 continents together to create an album soaked in the richness of each of their backgrounds and musical upbringing. Oneself is born. However this is not what you might of expected. This is something a little different, more progressive, united, cohesive and perhaps is a re birth. One Self are - Dj Vadim, Yarah Bravo and Blu Rum 13 The future Can one man be any more productive? Well the 4 Weetabix a day powerhouse has much more to come. Already cemented are productions for UK spitter’s Dark Circle, Foreign Beggars, Aspect’s, Kela as well as hot new Parisian super crew Bunzen, Up coming Latin lyrical reggae giant Paco Mendoza..... Music for Absolute Vodka, NOKIA. News of a 7 Notas 7 Colorez reunion, the new DJ Vadim LP - Sound Catcher out on BBE and countless other production’s, remixes dropping somewhere soon. Can it all be good? One thing for sure whether it’s Flamenco hip hop, Arabian space funk, Lettuce propelled rockets, new Vad reggae alias Junior Rankin or instro funk shiznittz Blixton Rodriguez, quality is guaranteed. hip hop but also so much more

ZINGA WARRIORZ (LIVE D+B)
Explosive 6-deep live d+b cru fresh out of Birmingham, showcasing their brand new material.
Featuring: Soulful female vocals from Boogaloo, the Don Carlo on live drums, the 3 mc's (P.K, Staitee & Stride), bass guitar, sample triggering & DJ Payne on the decks.
"We want to bring something that's been missing from drum and bass. Originality, crossover appeal and a proper live show". Brothers, PK and Stride were already music fiends before they even hit their teens. Growing up in Birmingham's cultural hotbed they were influenced by hip-hop and b-boy culture from an early age. They met up with like-minded Statey and formed various groups, playing live whenever possible. They were influenced by various styles but dance-music was the common feature that connected them. This fact soon led to them discovering the fast emerging UK culture of illegal raves, pirate radio and eventually Jungle music. As Jungle turned into drum and bass, nights sprung around Birmingham. PK and Stride returned to their hip-hop roots and began MCing and producing DnB beats alongside the effervescent Statey. As Statey points out, "the music reflects the sights and sounds of the city," that's so important to them. It was also important to make use of all their skills. "We wanted to incorporate the live elements that we'd learnt over the years." Thus before long it was natural to take their raw, energetic productions and throw them into the live mixing pot, with exciting performances at underground club nights. It was at one of these nights that they met DJ Payne who impressed with his down to earth approach and undiluted selection when spinning tunes. "Originally I joined as a sound engineer and DJ" continues Payne - but it wasn't long before he was throwing his own production vibes into the Zinga Warriorz mix. Since then Zinga Warriorz have become a 6-headed crew with talented soulster, Boogaloo, adding sweet female vocals. and energetic drummer "DON" Karlo performing the beats for the live sets. The result, emanating from their newly completed 'Down 2 Earth' production Studios, is a Grubby, neon DnB sound for the 21st century, clearly born out of a passion for the music and diverse culture that surrounds it. "So, are Zinga Warriorz a collective, live group, crew?" It doesn't matter," says Payne, "as long as the originality and zinga quality control is there." However you want to classify them, from the quality of their early releases its clear that this is a passion definitely worth following.

DJ STX (ECLER PRO TEAM)
Stx, previously one half of Heducation, now reps for Ecler on a national scale. His carefully moulded selection of hip hop, reggae and funk always rocks the house. If we’re really lucky he might even bring his alter-ego, Deano Ferrino. We can only hope!

ECHO & COLA (LIQUID D+B SET)
Heducation regular Cola, takes an excursion into fast-flowing, soulful drum and bass, with fellow beat-merchant, Echo.

MYLZ (HEDZ)
The Jack Russell of hip hop, Miles continues to bark up the wrong tree, but we’re gonna leash him to the decks, so there’ll be no chasing pussies.

BEATBULLYZ LIVE! ('UK UNSIGNED 2006' FINALIST)
Beatbullyz burst onto the scene with their cutting edge sound in April 2005. The trio immediately made an impact with the mix of ska, funk, hip hop and soulful melodic hooks with big beats and bass. Throughout the year their energetic live show saw them support artists such as DJ YODA, Nate James, DJ First Rate and Cuban Brothers, playing Austria's Snowbombing festival and Rotterdams Heineken Street Parade, and shows at venues such as Jazz Cafe London, 93 feet east, Medicine Bar and Boiler Room in Brum, Moles Club in Bath, Brunel Rooms and many more. Now with a finely polished and evolving live show, the trio have become a foursome by welcoming the wicked scratch skillz of DJ Philonious Funk. They are in the finals of the nationwide UK unsigned competition which takes place at Clapham Grand the week after Heducation, Lose your inhibitions, take the bull by the hornz, and ride the powerful tidal wave of sound these guys have created.

CENTRAL PROJECTION DJS:
DONIC, JAY LE ROC, TIDAL, SOUL OBJECTIVE
Central Projection was originally formed by Tidal, Jay Le Roc, Kytel & Roeg Du Casq back in Summer 2004, in an effort to put on regular 'Deep + Progressive' drum 'n' bass nights in the Midlands. It was an off-shoot night by advection, fifth rise & launch pad artists. The intention was never to become promoters, but in effect they had to create a scene to play out at. This had resulted in putting on a string of successful nights towards the end of 2004 with Blame, MC DRS, Pariah & Pete Rann. Later CP were honoured to host their first residency @ Progression Sessions alongside Good Looking Records Crew. LTJ Bukem, MC Conrad in Birmingham November 2004. (Medicine Bar - Digbeth). A new Residency has now started thanks to Carl from Hotfoot, now running in it's 3rd year. In 2005 CP entered a different phase with the help of MC Smilee, bringing a voice presence to the CP Nights. Last year saw such artists like Nookie, Big Bud, Blu Mar Ten, Galaxi (USA) Qumulus, Pete Rann & Local Boys Pariah; play in Birmingham at (Oc's Bar, digbeth)
Catch them at HEDUCATION and on the System Check Show on New Style Radio 98.7FM. (Every Fortnight 10PM-12AM) Hosted by Tidal & Jay Le Roc. Or check http://www.myspace.com/centralprojection for more info.

NOOKIE (STRICTLY DIGITAL)
Undoubtedly one of the leading lights in the Drum & Bass scene, Nookie, aka Cloud Nine/Second Vision/New Balance (along with Blame), is London/Herts DJ/producer/artist/remixer Gavin Cheung. Already into pirate radio, electro and hip hop, as well as jazz funk, while still a school boy, Gavin served his musical apprenticeship working in Soho's Red Records (which later became Unity Records). Not only did he get to meet many important people in the industry, but managed to establish himself as a reputable DJ. After producing a few bedroom mixes/demos for his hip-hop group 'Illegal Pressure', Gavin went on to study computer technology at college. “I’ve always been quite a technically minded person and my time in college helped me understand more the computer aided side of things, that has definitely helped me with my music production”. He then spent many years building and setting up his own home studio. Citing many musical influences he says: "Personally, I'm into good music full stop, whether it be hip-hop, soul, house etc. Music is about feeling and I try to reflect that in my music, be it when I'm playing out or in the studio, in my opinion there’s only two types of music, good and bad”.

PARIAH (GOOD LOOKING RECORDS)
Pariah were spawned from the dark years of the mid 90's. Having been listening to dance music from the late 80's, you know, summer of love and all that! …getting disillusioned with what they were hearing during the mid 90's, they decided to see if they could do any better themselves! The Pariah studio was set up in 1997, after much saving and hard work. They spent the next 12 months getting to know their equipment, enabling them to carve their own sound. The next thing Pariah did was to expand further and start sending out their music. Their first break came when they won a demo competition in 'Muzik' magazine which led to them getting noticed. They were approached by several people which led to them getting the break they needed. Firstly and most importantly, Trixsta from the then very reputable imprint 'Urban Flavour', signed up two tracks called 'Reprogram' and 'Aqueous'. This being Pariah's first 12" release became an underground anthem being played all around the globe by people like Blame, Doc Scott, Dr S Gachet, DJ Lee and many more. Pariah have always held Trixsta in high esteem for giving them their first push into the drum n bass scene. From here, Pariah went on to releasing many tracks on some of the scene's top labels. Their next release came courtesy of Terry Wilson’s 'Funk 21' label in conjunction with 'Partisan'. They had two tracks on the 'Funk 21 Album', they were also asked to do the mix cd as well! From there, Pariah went on to build a quality catalogue of releases. One relationship that the lads are most proud of is that of label boss and Dj, Blame. Pariah have had many tracks released on 720 degrees including three tracks on the mighty 'Two Revolutions' compilation album. From there, they continued their journey through drum n bass land and found themselves working with the master himself, 'LTJ Bukem', which still continues today. Pariah were offered a major deal with 'Good Looking' but after much deliberation, decided to turn it down. The reason for this was that the boys thought that they could not justify the offer of such a deal due to the amount of work involved. The Pariah boys still all work full time which doesn’t really leave a lot of time for them to be Dj'ing all over the world and also working on their music at the same time! They also wanted to be able explore different avenues within such a varied genre of music, luckily for them though, they are still producing music for 'Bukem' and his label and hope that it will continue, who knows, maybe they will sign one day if the offer is still there in the future! With many interesting and varied projects in the pipeline working with some of the scene's most reputable labels, Pariah's future looks bright! With them continuing to expand their studio set-up and DJing around the country, Pariah invite all of their followers along for a futuristic and soulful ride!

Event Date/Time: 13.10.2006 @ 21:30

HEDUCATION Hip Hop, Funk, Breaks, Soulful Drum & Bass They say Friday 13th is unlucky for some, but not for you fortunate few, who have the chance to see one of Birmingham's finest funksters flexing his fusion of fat floor-fillers on Friday! Special guest DJ: KATO (THE 39 STEPS / INVISIBLE ORCHESTRA / CRITICAL BEATDOWN / FUNKY MULE) Birmingham native, Kato, returns from Leeds to Heducation, his spiritual home. With him he brings his unique blend of breaks, funk and hip-hop! Since we were lucky enough to have him play for us last time, (a legendary set after MARK RAE), he has cut down on his promotional duties and concentrated on production. Having had previous releases as the 'INVISIBLE ORCHESTRA' (FIRST WORD RECORDS / VOICE OF THE UNDERGROUND), he is currently completing his album "THE 39 STEPS" with the jazz singer/saxophonist, Laura Fowles, and in recognition of his services to music, he was he was nominated for a FAME ACADEMY URBAN MUSIC AWARD! Please check this link to read his interview with the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/leeds/nightlife/2004/02/kato_interview.shtml THE DOCTOR (BASS OPERATIONS) Rich The Doctor is half of the force behind BASS OPERATIONS. He has been playing across the country with names such as Bryan Gee, Shy FX & EZ Rollers. COLA & DJ ECHO (LIQUID D+B SET) Our favourite hip hop & funk resident, COLA, turns his hand to some rolling basslines and liquid grooves. DJ CRO (NEW STYLE FM) Arguably Birmingham's hardest working hip-hopper, when he's not working in Jibbering Records, touring with SonnyJim & Kosyne, or playing on New Style FM, you can be pretty sure that he'll be talking, thinking or at least dreaming about music. MYLZ (HEDZ) The founder of Heducation, and general turntable addict, Mylz will be playing his renowned selection of party anthems. PAYING GUESTLIST: From now on we will be offering a paying guestlist service to all of our members, so if you are planning on coming down, please reply to this email with the names of you and your mates, and we will keep your spaces open until midnight, and you'll be able to JUMP THE QUEUE. Free Entry before 11pm. After: £3 (members) / £6 (non-members). Membership £1 on door. Free bottle of Corona Extra for the first 25 hedz.
